Support to stop smoking in Bradford now available in some GP practices and pharmacies

A Bradford stop-smoking service has been expanded and is now also available in some GP practices and pharmacies in the district.

In support of Stoptober, the annual campaign from Public Health England to help people quit smoking, Living Well is keen to let everyone know that it’s never too late to quit and stopping smoking is one of the best things anyone can do for their health.

The Living Well stop smoking service offers people free, personal support with ongoing professional guidance. Expert advisors will determine the best methods and aids to help people to quit for good. They also help people to manage cravings, and explain how to use proven methods and treatment including NRT (nicotine replacement therapy).

Support includes a free, personal service that helps you to quit using the method that’s right for you including prescribed stop smoking medications. They can also help with stopping smoking in pregnancy. Information and advice is also available on stopping other forms of tobacco use like Shisha and Paan.

Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places said: “We are really pleased we can now offer our stop-smoking service to more people locally through their pharmacy or GP as well as directly from our team.

Although lots of smokers have probably tried stopping smoking before, we’re urging them not to give up on quitting. Getting the right support is proven to make the difference and this service can really help people to quit with tailored support.

Research shows that if smokers make it to 28 days smoke-free, they are five times more likely to quit for good. When people stop smoking, they start doing so much more, from moving better to saving money, and being able to breathe more easily.

A new survey by Opinium shows that more than half of smokers want to quit, and three quarters (75%) would never have started smoking if they could go back in time.

Stop smoking advice is available to everyone over 18 in Bradford District through the Living Well Service.
